Sony Announces the PlayStation Classic

Sony announced today that they would be releasing a mini version of their very first console, the PlayStation 1.
After the huge success of the NES and SNES Classic Edition, people were expecting this year’s next plug and play console announcement to be the N64 Mini, but Sony surprised people this morning by revealing the existence of the PlayStation Classic.

The device will be smaller than a regular PS1 and like Nintendo’s mini console it can easily be held with one hand. The PlayStation Classic will come pre-loaded with 20 PlayStation games. At the moment only five of those games have been announced: Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms.

The console will come bundled with two controllers, the version with no joystick, one HDMI cable, one USB cable, but no power adapter.

The PlayStation Classic will be released on December 3, 2018, in the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan and Australia and will cost $100 USD, €99.99 euro and $150 Australian Dollars.

Toad's Mushroom Head

Toad’s Head is Not a Hat

Toad’s head has been the subject of heated discussions for years, with some fans arguing that the Mushroom Kingdom character was wearing a mushroom shaped hat while others saying that this “hat” was in fact part of his body.

The hat theory was given ammunitionz by the Super Mario Bros. Super Show in which we saw Toad take out the mushroom part of his head like you would a hat and even use it as a parachute on another occasion.

Hatless Toad

We finally got the answer to this question earlier this year when Yoshiaki Koizumi, producer of Super Mario Odyssey, answered it in a YouTube video in which he was asked rapid fire questions about Super Mario Odyssey and Mario in general. In the video, after being asked whether Toad’s mushroom head was a hat or part of his head, Koizumi answered:

So that, as it turns out… is actually Toad’s Head. I’m going to have to leave it to all of you to figure out exactly how that works out. Maybe there’s something inside…

So there you have it, the top part of Toad’s head is indeed his head and not a hat. Koizumi also hints that something might even be inside it, whether that’s Toad’s brain or something else is a mystery for another time.

This means that a $59,99 USD digital game will get you 300 gold points which are worth $3,00 towards your next purchase or online subscription.

Nintendo Switch players will also be able to try out the service with a 7 day free trial.

Online Play

For a lot of people, the main reason to subscribe to the service will be to keep the ability to play games online on their Nintendo Switch. While we’ve known about the fact that online would eventually be charged for, Switch owners have been able to enjoy various Nintendo and third-party games online for free since the console launched in March of last year. From Tuesday, however, people will have to pay in order to play online in games such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, Mario Tennis Aces as well as upcoming games like Diablo 3 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. How this will affect the player count of those games remains to be seen, but it is likely that there will be a drop in online players in existing Switch games.

For free to play games like Fortnite and Paladins the Nintendo Switch online subscription will not be required to play online.

Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will also get access to a number of Nintendo Entertainment System games with their subscription. At launch, 20 games will be available and in the following months of the year, 3 games will be added every month. These games will be playable in multiplayer, locally and online and while online a player on another Switch can even be given control of a game remotely.

The NES games can be played while offline, but the users will have to connect to the internet within 7 days in order to keep his access to the games.

NES - Nintendo Switch Online

The launch games will be:

  • Soccer
  • Tennis
  • Donkey Kong

Save Data Cloud Backup

Nintendo Cloud save backup

One of the biggest plus of subscribing to the Nintendo Switch Online service is the added ability to save your game to the cloud. Right now, without the online subscription, if you were to lose or break your Nintendo Switch, all of your saves would also be lost. The Switch, unlike the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, does not offer the options to transfer saves to an external support like an SD card or a Hard Drive. Because of this, the only way to ensure you keep your save even if something were to happen to your Switch is to use the Online service’s Cloud backup.

However, not every game will be compatible with the service and allow you to save your game to the cloud. A few notable game that will not offer the service are Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu! and Let’s Go Eevee!, Splatoon 2, but also third-party games such as FIFA 19 or NBA 2K 19. We also learned that if you were to let your Nintendo Switch Online subscription lapse, the save data would be deleted, currently PlayStation keeps your save for 6 months after your subscription to PS Plus ends and Xbox offers cloud saves for free.

Voice Chat

For those hoping that the online service would fix Nintendo’s issue with Voice Chat, you will sadly be disappointed. The Nintendo Switch Online App for IOS and Android will still be the only way Nintendo provides players to voice chat in their online games. When it launches last year, the app was not well received and numerous players use third-party apps instead such as Discord or Skype in order to chat with their friends while playing Splatoon 2 or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. For third-parties, it seems to be up to the developer, as Fornite as shown this year that, when enabled by the makers of the game, voice chat through a headset will work.

Special Offers

The last thing offered with Nintendo Switch Online will be special offers. As of now Nintendo’s website contains two special offers for subscribers. The first one is a pair of exclusive gear for Splatoon 2, namely an online Jersey and an online Squidkid V Shoes.

The second one is access to an exclusive product sold by Nintendo, two NES controller for the Nintendo Switch. The controllers are packed together and sold for $59,99 USD. This version of the NES controller is wireless, has a battery that can be recharged when the controllers are attached to the Switch and also an added L and R button.

Nintendo Switch NES Controllers

Japan will get their classic version of the Famicon controller. In that version, just like in their original form factor, the second controller has no start or select button which have been replaced by a microphone. The microphone was used for added gameplay options in games such as The Legend of Zelda, but it remains to be seen if that microphone is usable or just a stylistic choice in order to keep the controller authentic.

Nintendo Switch Famicon Controllers

The controllers will not ship before December 2018 and only one pack can be purchased per account. Trial members will not be able to buy them.

September 6th Nintendo Direct Delayed

Update: The Nintendo direct planed for Thursday September 6th, 2018 has been delayed to a currently unknown date due to the earthquake that hit Hokkaido on Wednesday.

Original story follows

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Nintendo announced earlier today that on September 6th they will hold a Nintendo Direct that will focus on 3DS and Switch games. The presentation is set to last approximately 35 minutes and will start at 11 p.m. (UK time)/ 6 p.m. (ET)/ 3 p.m. (PT).

This Direct comes only one week after Nintendo’s Nindies Showcase which gave the spotlight to indie games coming to the Switch. The Japanese gaming company hasn’t revealed any information about the games that will be highlighted in the Direct yet, but fans are expecting some information on previously announced titles such as new Super Mario Party!, Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu and Pokemon: Let’s Go Eevee all set for release this fall.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which is also scheduled for release later this year, had a dedicated Direct early last month in which newcomers Simon Belmont and King K Rool were announced. Whether the all-star fighting game will once again be showcased so quickly after its Direct remains to be seen.

Nintendo teased in July that they still had unannounced game coming to the Nintendo Switch this Fall which has fueled rumors of ports of New Super Mario Bros. U, Metroid Trilogy Remastered or Pikmin 4, all of which could potentially be announced on Thursday’s presentation. The mention of the 3DS also confirms Nintendo’s desire to keep supporting the handheld despite its age and the Switch’s success and fan can expect to see more on titles such as Luigi’s Mansion and Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey.

The Nintendo Online service is also set to release later this month and it is possible that Nintendo will use tomorrow’s Direct to give Switch owners more information about the service.

The presentation can be watched live Nintendo’s website and on their official Twitch and YouTube channels.

Fallout 76

Fallout 76 Beta Will Be A Timed Exclusive on Xbox One

Bethesda revealed on the FAQ part of their Fallout website that the Beta for the recently announced Fallout 76 will be coming to Xbox One first.

To the question of when and on what platform the Beta would be available, Bethesda provided this answer:

The B.E.T.A. will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and on PC (via Bethesda.net). Stay tuned for exact timing for each platform here and @Fallout on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Please note that the B.E.T.A. for Xbox One will begin first, followed by other platforms.

The news is not that surprising as the association between Fallout 76 and Microsoft was made clear last week when Todd Howard appeared at the Microsoft E3 Press conference to present a trailer for the game.

To get access to the Beta, gamers have to preorder the game on either PlayStation 4, Xbox One or PC.

The Elder Scroll VI is Coming

7 years after the first release of Skyrim and after years of pushing back or avoiding the question, Bethesda finally revealed that they are working on The Elder Scroll 6.

At this point, not much has been made public about the game. Todd Howard closed of Bethesda’s E3 press conference with a teaser showing off natural landscape from the game and possibly hinting at the new setting.

No date or release window has been announced, the game will come out on the next generation of console as it was stated that it would come after Bethesda’s new IP, Starfield, which was confirmed to be a next-gen game.
